Subscription app with or without bank access?

Updated: 2026-09

In short

Automatic detection is convenient and requires access to your complete transaction history — far more than the subscriptions. Manual capture costs half an hour once and hands over no transaction data. Both are defensible; the choice should be deliberate.

The difference between these two approaches is rarely stated openly. For automatic subscription detection, a service needs access to all transactions — not only the recurring ones. It therefore sees rent, salary, purchases and everything else.

That is not a scandal but a trade: convenience for visibility. The question is not whether the trade is legitimate but whether it is made deliberately — and which side suits whom.

When an alternative is the better choice

You do not experience visibility into your transactions as a problem.

You realistically would not keep up manual capture.

You suspect many forgotten subscriptions you could no longer reconstruct yourself.

FAQ

Is a bank connection unsafe?

Not as such — reputable providers use established interfaces. The question is not the security of the transfer but the extent of visibility granted permanently.

How long does manual capture really take?

With around twenty subscriptions, about half an hour if the statements are to hand. After that it is one entry per new subscription.

Who is automation still better for?

People who accept the visibility and would certainly not maintain a manual list. An incomplete manual list is worse than a complete automatic one.

Will I miss subscriptions without automation?

Only if the first capture was incomplete. Three months of statements plus the annual statement plus app-store overviews cover practically everything.

SubTracker

The real value of automation is the warning — and a renewal alert delivers it before the charge, not after.

Without a bank connection there is no interface that can fail; the overview stays available independently.

An annual reconciliation with your statements recovers most of automation’s completeness advantage.
