Budgeting without a bank login: import statements instead of sharing access
Updated: 2026-10
Many budget apps require direct access to your bank account. If you do not want that, import statements as a CSV file: transactions are categorised automatically, duplicates skipped, and an assistant answers questions about your own numbers — without any app ever receiving bank credentials.
Budgets rarely fail for lack of will but because of effort: hardly anyone keeps up manual expense entry for more than a few weeks. The convenient alternative, direct bank access, is not an option for many, because they do not want to hand credentials or permanent read access to an app.
What is missing is a middle way: little effort, full control over which data the app sees, and still an analysis that does more than a spreadsheet.
How it works
- 01
Export the statement
Download transactions as a CSV file in e-banking — as often as suits your rhythm.
- 02
Import
Upload the file; transactions are categorised automatically and entries already imported are skipped.
- 03
Check categories
Correct individual assignments where needed so the analysis is accurate.
- 04
Ask questions
Ask the assistant where you spent more than planned, how your savings goal is developing or which category is growing.
Why it fits here
BudgetHub imports CSV files from more than eight Swiss banks, categorises transactions automatically and skips duplicates — no bank login needed.
The BudgetAI assistant answers questions about your own numbers in Swiss francs, such as savings, overspending and goals. Those wanting to capture bills and receipts too will find that in the solution for scanning QR-bills and receipts.
FAQ
Why not direct bank access?
Many people do not want to give an app credentials or permanent read access. CSV import lets them decide themselves which data reaches the app and when.
Which banks are supported?
Import supports CSV files from more than eight Swiss banks. The current list is on budgethub.ch.
Is this not more effort than an automatic connection?
A little more: one export per month or week. In return your bank credentials stay with you.
