GEO or classic SEO: where companies should invest in 2026
Updated: 2026-10
GEO and classic SEO are not either-or. GEO aims to be cited as a source in AI answers such as AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Perplexity and builds on the same foundations: indexing, technical quality and trustworthy content. If SEO basics are not yet in place, start there; if they are, add citable content and entity signals deliberately.
With AI answers in search engines and assistants, a new buzzword has emerged: Generative Engine Optimization. Some vendors declare classic SEO obsolete; others see GEO as old wine in new bottles. Neither helps with the budget decision.
This comparison describes what GEO actually does differently, what stays the same and how companies should allocate effort. We work on both, for clients and for our own websites.
Head to head
| Criterion | GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) | Classic SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Being cited and recommended as a source in generated answers. | Ranking in search results for relevant queries and earning clicks. |
| Foundation | Builds on indexed, technically clean and trustworthy content — that is, on SEO. | Technology, content, internal linking, authority. |
| Content format | Precise, self-contained answers, clear definitions, evidenced statements, an unambiguous entity. | Pages that fully satisfy search intent, with good structure and user experience. |
| Measurability | Limited; citations in AI answers must be checked deliberately, standards are still emerging. | Established via Search Console, rankings, clicks and conversions. |
| Technical signals | Structured data, llms.txt, access for AI crawlers, consistent entity information. | Crawlability, indexing, load time, canonicals, sitemap. |
| Maturity | Young; recommendations change with the systems. | Mature, with known mechanisms. |
When GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) wins
- —Your SEO foundations are in place: pages are indexed, the technology is clean and there is substantial content.
- —Your audience uses AI assistants for research and vendor selection, for example for B2B services that need explaining.
- —You have own expertise that can be turned into citable content: definitions, checklists, comparisons, experience.
When Classic SEO wins
- —Your website has technical problems, important pages are not indexed or content is thin.
- —Your customers search mainly transactionally or locally, where classic results and maps dominate.
- —You need measurable results quickly with clear attribution to enquiries.
Our take
Treat GEO as an extension, not a replacement. The order is almost always the same: first technical foundations and indexing, then substantial content with clear structure, then targeted GEO measures such as unambiguous entity signals, citable definitions, structured data, llms.txt and access for AI crawlers.
Many GEO measures also improve classic SEO, because they make content more precise and trustworthy. So do not invest in separate programmes, but in content equally clear to people, search engines and models, and check regularly whether you are cited in AI answers on your core topics.

GEO/AEO optimisation (AI search)
GEO and AEO optimisation makes your content citable for AI answer engines: structured data, snippet-ready answers, a clean llms.txt and clear entity signals. The result is visibility where search increasingly happens — in the answers of ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI search.
Technical SEO audit
A technical SEO audit examines the foundation of your findability: indexing, Core Web Vitals, structured data, crawling and site architecture. The result is a prioritised list of actions showing which technical levers deliver the greatest visibility gain — and in what order.
FAQ
Has AI search made classic SEO obsolete?
No. Search engines’ AI answers rest on indexed pages, and many assistants use web search. Without indexing and trust there is no citation in AI answers either.
What is the most important GEO lever?
Content that answers a question precisely, with evidence and self-contained, combined with a clearly recognisable entity. Technical signals such as structured data help but do not replace the content.
How do you measure GEO success?
By regularly checking relevant questions in the main AI systems and documenting citations, complemented by brand searches and direct enquiries. Tools for this are emerging; standards like Search Console do not yet exist.
Should you allow AI crawlers?
To be cited in AI answers, allow the relevant crawlers. To protect content, you can exclude them via robots.txt, but then forgo visibility in those systems.
